Langford (Sam) is born in Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia.

March 4, 1883

[1880, 1886]. Sam Langford comes to Boston in 1901, and works initially as a porter at the Roanoke Athletic Club on Cambridge Street. He begins his career as a prize fighter in 1902 and fights for a title in 1903.* Known as the “Boston Tar Baby,” Langford compiles a record of 137-23-92 in his career, despite suffering from poor vision, and subsequently becomes the first non-champion voted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. After moving to New York, he returns to Boston, living in the West End and then in Cambridge. He dies in Cambridge on January 12, 1956.
